Q: What is a police duty belt?
A: A police duty belt is the outer belt a uniformed officer wears to carry essential gear
— holster, handcuffs, OC spray, baton, and radio — distributing the weight around the
waist so it stays secure and within reach on duty.
Q: Leather or nylon — which duty belt should I choose?
A: Leather belts give a traditional, polished look for Class-A and dress uniforms and
hold their shape well. Nylon belts are lighter, flexible, and easy to clean, which makes
them popular for active patrol. Many officers keep one of each for different assignments.
Q: What width duty belt do I need?
A: Most duty belts are 2" or 2.25" wide to support a full gear load. Narrower 1.5" and
1.75" belts are common as inner/under belts or for lighter setups. Match the width to
your holster and accessory loops so everything threads correctly.
Q: What are belt keepers and do I need them?
A: Belt keepers are short straps that wrap around both your duty belt and your trouser
belt to lock the two together, stopping the duty belt from sliding or rotating. Most
officers use four to six spaced around the belt.
Q: How should a duty belt fit?
A: Size to the waist measurement where you'll actually wear the belt — over your uniform
and inner belt, not your pants size. It should sit snug enough to carry the load without
digging in. Check each product's size range before ordering.
